If you\u2019ve been following me for the last few months, you know I\u2019ve been talking a lot about titles. I think I finally figured out why I\u2019ve been on this kick for a while. Titles are kind of a big deal for me. It\u2019s how I introduce my layout to the viewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you know how important introductions can be. A good introduction should be more than just words. It’s about highlighting the essence of your story and making a lasting positive impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you read my \u201cTitle Tip<\/a><\/strong>\u201d post back in September or 2024, you know I sometimes struggle getting my title to be noticed without dominating the layout. And I\u2019m fairly certain I\u2019m not the only person that faces this challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today I\u2019m going to show you a super simple way to highlight just about any title in a very subtle way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You probably are already aware that I love using bevels and drop shadows. But there are an awful lot of people that will tell you those are big No-Nos for text\/type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly, I disagree with those people. I maintain that bevel and drop shadows can be used as long as they are used properly and don\u2019t become distracting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I think I\u2019ve mentioned that I really dislike the \u201csticker\u201d look for most word art but specifically for titles. Don\u2019t get me wrong, stickers can be fun but they have their place. And in my mind\u2026it\u2019s not in word art or titles! But that\u2019s just me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, you\u2019re going to be surprised that I\u2019m about to show you how to turn a title into, wait for it\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026a sticker with a transparent edge!<\/p>\n\n\n

Quick reminder, I use Photoshop Elements (PSE) 2024. If you use a different version, some of my screen shots may not look the same as what you see on your screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will admit that I don\u2019t use this technique very often. So infrequently actually that I had all but forgotten about it until a friend of mine reminded me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m going to keep this very simple today. As usual I\u2019ll start with a 12×12 blank file. And I\u2019m going to pull in a nice patterned background from \u201cSeashell Memories<\/a><\/strong>\u201d by Heartstrings Scrap Art:<\/p>\n\n\n

Note<\/strong>: If you\u2019re following along feel free to use any paper you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This technique will work on any font and just about any simple text word art. By simple text I mean word art that doesn\u2019t have any embellishments. Something like this piece of word art<\/a><\/strong> that I got at Creative Fabrica:<\/p>\n\n\n

I\u2019m going to be using a script font today \u201cSherley Regular<\/a><\/strong>\u201d available free at DaFont. So, I grab the Horizontal Type tool:<\/p>\n\n\n

I select the Sherley Regular font, set the Color to a medium aqua (#549bad), the Size to 80, the Leading to Auto and the Tracking to zero and click on the Left align text icon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note<\/strong>: If you\u2019re following along feel free to use whatever font & color you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I then click once near the bottom middle of the document and type my title and position it exactly where I want it to sit:<\/p>\n\n\n

This looks nice. But the Sherley font has some nice glyphs and I\u2019m going to use one to change the \u201cy\u201d at the end of happy:<\/p>\n\n\n

Making this change is totally optional. But if you need some pointers about using glyphs please refer back to my \u201cFancy Ligatures<\/a><\/strong>\u201d post from April of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, I go to the top tool bar and select Layer-> Layer Style-> Style Settings:<\/p>\n\n\n

PSE opens the Style Settings dialog box and I set the Lighting Angle to 120 degrees. Then I click the Drop Shadow box and set the shadow color chip to a very dark grey (#262626), the Size to 12px, the Distance to 10px, and the Opacity to 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, I click the Stroke box and set the Stroke color chip to white, the Size to 10px, the Position to Outside, and the Opacity to 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n

I click OK to confirm and here\u2019s my \u201csticker\u201d title:<\/p>\n\n\n

I know the difference is really hard to see in this small image so here\u2019s a closer look at the before and after:<\/p>\n\n\n

Even with this image you may not be able to see the difference. If that\u2019s the case just right-click on the image above and select Open image in new tab. That should give you a better view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll admit this technique is designed to give just the slightest \u201clift\u201d to the title keeping it very subtle. On the light background I used, it\u2019s extremely subtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can play around with the Size of the Stroke and Drop Shadow settings for different fonts and backgrounds or just for a more pronounced effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, here\u2019s a closer before and after look at the title in the featured image at the top of this post:<\/p>\n\n\n

Using the same settings I used for my \u201cSo Happy\u201d title, the results on a dark background are significantly easier to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope you\u2019ll try this simple little trick to give your next title a little boost!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extra Pointers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Keep in mind this transparent edge trick is designed to make a very subtle change to the way your title\/word art appears on the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Font size and color can have a lot to do with how this \u201ctransparent sticker\u201d turns out. The lighter color text you use, the less noticeable the stroke will be. In those cases, raising the opacity of the stroke can make it more noticeable. But, if you\u2019re trying to avoid the \u201csticker\u201d look, I would recommend not going any higher than 30-40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The color of the background can also affect the \u201ctransparent sticker\u201d. The darker the background the less noticeable the stroke may be. In those cases, raising the opacity of the shadow can make a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re using a fairly light patterned background and you\u2019re having trouble getting the \u201ctransparent sticker\u201d to show up by changing opacity levels, try changing the color of the stroke to one of the lighter colors in your pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When adjusting shadow color, size and opacity be careful that you don\u2019t end up with what looks like a floating title. Those are almost never a good idea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I highly discourage the use of a dark color for the stroke unless you are working on a dark solid or patterned background. In those cases, a dark stroke can actually work to enhance the effect a bit more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
