Where Is The Laughter
There are so many in the world right now suffering incredible losses on multiple fronts. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a home or their very freedom; many are struggling in profound ways. Losses, grief, and pain cause us to change as human beings. When we see turmoil, strife and anguish, it can change our perspective on life. With so much discord, dysfunction and crises, it’s hard to find the laughter any day never mind finding it as Christmas approaches.
I imagine, almost everyone has lost the Christmas spirit at least once in their life. For some people the spirit may return the next year, but for others, it may never return, and that’s okay. The single most important thing is to always fully embrace the true meaning of Christmas. This is where we can find hope again.
World Changes
Maybe you have experienced loss, pain, or other trauma this past year that has caused you not to feel the Christmas spirit too. If this is true for you, there is no reason to feel ashamed or to feel as though there is something wrong with you. You have simply gone through difficult times, and it has impacted you in a deep way.
If you don’t feel like putting up a tree, decorating, or doing Christmas activities, this is perfectly fine. Most of what has been tied together with Christmas are things related to the Christmas culture rather than finding their roots in the real reason for the season. All that we need to celebrate Christmas is a heart and mind focused on our faith in God, love and hope.
If you are struggling, don’t let it consume you. Instead, use it as a time to keep growing. Perhaps by not feeling the “cultural” Christmas spirit, you will be more attuned to focusing on the true meaning of Christmas and all that it promises. Instead of being focused on the Christmas festivities, materialism, and consumerism, this year you may actually be able to fully grasp the promise of hope for our future.
Where Are You Christmas?
I am frequently a self-professed “Grinch” during the weeks leading up to Christmas. This is due in large part to my feelings about the extreme commercialism and how so many skip the holy part of the season altogether.
I have some very fond memories of the Dr. Suess “cartoon” that aired on television during my childhood. As an adult it took on an even deeper meaning to me especially after the birth of my first grandchild. There’s a story there…better left for another time. The important thing is even the Grinch learned what Christmas means!
With that said, here is another lyrical gift for you today. I invite you to grab a cup of coffee, cocoa, or maybe even a glass of wine, sit back, close your eyes and concentrate on the words to “Where Are You Christmas?” I can only wish that you too will walk with more love in your heart and your mind; feeling a little more like Christmas and having a little more hope.
Take note of the many reasons you have to be thankful this Christmas. Spend time thanking God specifically for ways He has provided for you — spiritually, relationally, financially, etc. Praise Him for His goodness, grace, and faithfulness in all seasons of life.
