Anticipation

Anticipation

We are now less than three full weeks from Christmas. I know not everyone who follows me is a Christian. But most all of you are certainly familiar with Christmas. Regardless of your religious beliefs, I hope you all have a wonder season whichever holiday you observe.

The anticipation of Christmas is considered by many to be one of the great joys of the season. It’s also a time full of seemingly endless rush & chaos.

So, my plan for the remainder of 2023 is to keep things very simple here on the blog. I’ll still be posting something each week but it may be more about inspiration than tips or techniques.

Christmas Countdown

Advent

Did you know that Christianity is the world’s largest and most widespread religion with roughly 2.4 billion followers representing one-third of the global population?

Most, but not all Christians kicked off the season of Advent this past Sunday. For some, Advent can be a just a simple and fun tradition of counting down the days to Christmas. But for others — particularly those who believe Jesus to be the incarnation of God and the long-awaited Messiah — Advent is a shared experience of meditation and prayer that celebrates the arrival of Jesus.

Religious practices aside, the arrival of December ushers in a flurry of activity which takes over our every waking thought. There are lists to be checked, plans to be finalized, dinner parties to be scheduled and attended, gifts to shop for then wrap, groceries to buy and children and guests to entertain.

Avoid Chaos

Before you get all wrapped up in the hustle and bustle, I want you take a few minutes to sit down and concentrate on a purpose for your preparations this year. Rethink your past holiday seasons. Think about the things that went well in years past and things that didn’t…things you might want to change…for the better. Mainly, don’t fall victim to the chaos.

The single most important thing is to take time off from the craziness swirling around you and spend some time enjoying your family! And if you don’t still have family “at home” be sure to just carve out some quiet time, no matter how briefly, every day.

Family or no…don’t answer that phone, or that e-mail – turn off those electronic notifications! Even if you can’t take the time during the pre-holiday weeks, take Saturdays and Sundays, to remove yourself from it all and delight in each other’s company (or simply the quiet). You’ll be better tempered, more relaxed and forever grateful when Christmas is here.

I Need A Silent Night

Amy Grant - I Need A Silent Night

I happen to be one of those people who never looks forward to the flurry of often stressful activities leading up to the big day. Several (more than I can recall) years ago I discovered an amazing song that helps me get through it all a little better.

I have always loved Amy Grant and her music. And this is my tip for you today. I invite you to grab a cup of whatever comforting beverage you enjoy, sit back, close your eyes and just listen to “I Need A Silent Night” …

Some Final Tips

Just Breathe

The best time to relax is when you don’t think you have time for it!

Try to just enjoy the anticipation of a lovely holiday season. And above all else, remember the reason for the season!

Take note of the many reasons you have to be thankful this Christmas. Spend time thanking God specifically for ways He has provided for you — spiritually, relationally, financially, etc. Praise Him for His goodness, grace, and faithfulness in all seasons of life.

Practice the art of truly listening to others as you gather with family and friends. Whether you’re having dinner, opening presents, or sitting around and catching up with those you haven’t seen in a while, pay attention to what is said instead of thinking about how you will respond. Truly listening is one of the best ways to show your loved ones that you care.

I wish you the clarity to see that you are strong enough to handle your challenges and capable enough to do whatever needs to be done.
